Digital dermoscopy
is a perfectly safe and painless procedure with which surface and colour of the skin can be examined in detail. This method of microscopic magnification is mostly used in order to assess whether a pigmented skin area is something benign or if it might be something suspicious.
Digital dermoscopy is not carried out using a hand-held optical microscope; it produces digital images. This method is used when it is not appropriate to remove a pigmented skin lesion immediately for analysis, but when it should be closely followed to see if there are any changes in its appearance and condition.
Pigmented skin areas that do not change over time are less suspicious: digital dermoscopy allows any changes to be made visible under standardised conditions.
There are many people who always have suspicious moles which subsequently prove to be benign surgically removed. The use of this method can often make such interventions unnecessary.
