The purpose of the skin examination is to detect skin cancers and their precursors. If there is a suspicion thereof addititional investigations will confirm or outrule the suspicion.
An important tool for skin examination is a handheld or digital dermatoscope. It not only enlarges but often reveals diagnostic clues.
