The purpose of a skin examination is to detect skin cancers and their precursors. If there is a suspicion cancer may be present, additional investigations will confirm or rule out the suspicion.
An important tool for skin examination is a handheld dermatoscope. It not only enlarges but often reveals diagnostic clues.
