Laser-treatments of the skin
Lasertherapies have been gold standard treatments for certain skin diseases for years. Oftentimes they are clearly superior to other treatment options, or, in fact, the only possible treatments.
How do lasers work?
Laserlight is absorbed (taken up) in different components of the skin and is transformed from light into heat. Since this is a very specific process surrounding tissue is spared. To treat various skin changes one needs different lasers.
Contrary to the wide spread view laser treatments are often disagreable and need numbing prior to the treatment. This maybe simple cooling with cold packs local anaesthetic creams or injections.
The result of laser treatments will only show after some time. At times a series of treatments are necessary. Often the aspect of a laser treated area is worse for a while. Sometimes you need bandaiding the area for some time.
What can lasers be used for on our skin?
Lasers are used for laserepilation, for the treatment of teleangiectasia «broken vessels» (Couperose) or the removal of Sunspots, tattoos, permanent Make-ups or dirt-tatoos, which can be the consequence of dirt-deposition after accidents. Benign tumours of the skin like seborrheic keratoses «Agewarts», certain, benign moles, Skintags, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, Cholesterol deposits around the eyes (Xanthelasma) are all amenable to laser treatments, typically with a nice cosmetic result. Wrinkling can be improved with laser light also.
Scars, after Acne, trauma or surgery can be improved by laser treatments.
