Acne in Adults

Adult type of acne is a form of acne that arises newly or persists since puberty after the age of 25. Sometimes cessation of birth control pills or hormonal implant may induce it. It mainly affects women.

Adult type acne differs from pubertal acne in location (mainly the U-zone is affected, it often lacks comedones and consists of deep, sometimes painful inflammatory nodules. Premenstrual worsening is common.

It is important to evaluate whether or not there are hormonal or other causes that can be eliminated. Unfortunately most of the time the cause of adult type acne remains unknown.

Therapies in adult type acne can be oral therapies. Most of the time patients have had many different drug therapies already. Many are looking out for other laser- or photodynamic treatments in which we have accumulated a long experience. Cosmetic treatments and pampering are also important, because acne is well known to worsen well-beeing and self-esteem.
